This is a very fine watch that I got for navigating the dense woods behind our new house -- it's easy to get turned around.
First -- I can see how this band might not outlive a Redwood, but it's not something to panic over, as another reviewer here seems to have done. In fact, I did my "due diligence," went to Timex's website, and clicked on their official store link to try to see if new bands were available. I didn't see the band for this watch.
So, I fired off an email to Timex to ask this question -- if this band can't be replaced, the watch needs to be returned, so are replacement bands available? Here's the response I got in UNDER TWO HOURS:
"Thank you for your inquiry. You can call us at 1-800-448-4639 to order a replacement band for your watch. The cost will be $8.00-$12.00, plus any applicable tax. Please have your watch with you when you call. We sell band by the original style number of the watch, this is a replaceable band, I am not sure why the people you have mentions in the email did not call Timex to find out where to get the band. Voguestrap makes replacement bands, but not for unique watches like some of the newer Timex watches. You can order 42761 any time you need a new band."
Fears allayed. This is a fine watch. The 3 official alarms plus a timer alarm, hydration reminder for hiking, 5 "occasion" alarms should give even the most alarmed people enough to fiddle with. The ability to calibrate the watch to either Magnetic or True North is probably more than I need, but it's a nifty feature for the dedicated hiker.
The Indiglo on this watch seems to be a bit of a battery-saver type. It doesn't illuminate the skyline as some I've seen, but it does work well.Generally, the display is black on the LCD background, but pressing the Indiglo button changes the black to fluorescent blue -- not the background, just the displayed numbers and characters. Not usable as a flashlight, but nothing to scoff at and plainly visible. Also, if you hold down the Indiglo button, it turns on a "night" setting so that the Indiglo feature activates each time a button is pressed. Handy.
With 4 buttons (5 counting the Indiglo) to press for settings, it takes a little practice to remember which move the settings up, which down, and which from hour to minute to second, etc. But there's not a steep learning curve here as some have hinted in other reviews on other variants of this watch.
The buttons are a bit hard to press, and they're clearly designed to be pressed while there is some resistance against pressing them -- i.e., it is designed to be set while worn on the arm. I do a lot of free-handing these buttons to use the timer, etc., while wearing another watch, and I admit that they are a bit hard to press, and two hands are better than one. Nonetheless, I'm nitpicking here. All around, a very fine watch, even if the band is a bit fragile looking, though I've had it for 2 weeks now, and I can't say it's as fragile as I had feared by reading the other review.
